Friends Program: For Internationals

One great benefit of overseas study at NIU is the opportunity to share your life and culture with an American “Friend”. You will also join in the life of an American who will be a bridge to American and community culture for you. What may develop is a lifelong friendship, though that is not required!!

What to expect of the American Friend:

• One semester commitment to be a community contact and “Friend” of a new international student.
• One time a month contact
• One time in home of the American Friend
• One Network of Nations Special Event; attend together. These are:
  
  
  
  • Friendship Dinner (Feb)
  • Memorial Picnic in the Country (May)
  • New Student Welcome Picnic (Aug)
  • International Thanksgiving Dinner (Nov)

What is the commitment of an International Friend?

• The above helps the International to know what to expect from the American Friend
• If you are an International Friend, we encourage you to invite the American Friend to your home or apartment once for a visit.
